“Fleet management contributes in Road Safety”

Mr. Gino Yazbeck, owner & GM of Seter

1- Who is Seter?

S.E.T.E.R, Societe d’Etudes Techniques d’Entreprise et de Representation, was founded in 1980 by Mr. Pierre Zablit. In 1996, I joined his son Nadim to develop the business of Fleet mgt better known in that time as the Tachograph, imposed by law in the European countries for commercial vehicles; in 1998, the first On- Board computer was developed by Siemens VDO to help companies monitor their fleet of mixed vehicles. In 2003, I bought the company and continued what we started. We now represent Mix Telematics, owner of the Siemens VDO brand, in the MENA region running a network of over 12 distributors. In Lebanon, we are specialized in offering vehicle solutions; we represent 4 international well known companies in this industry: Parrot, the French company providing Bluetooth solutions for cars; VDO Continental, the German company manufacturing OE parts for car manufactures like BMW, Mercedes, Renault, Peugeot, Volvo etc…, Hale Electronics, the Austrian company for Taxi meters and last but not least, Mix Telematics a South African company leader in recovery and fleet mgt solutions.

2- What is a fleet mgt system?

In brief and simply a fleet mgt system is also known as an IVMS; In Vehicle Monitoring System which consists of an on board computer connected to the vehicle engine capturing, recording and analyzing vehicle status. The new IVMS are now known as tracking solutions since it embeds a GPS and GSM modem for online data capturing.

3- How does it work?

The OBC is installed behind the dash board of the vehicle and our technicians will connect it to the speed sensor and the engine rpm to capture both real speed and engine rev; additional physical wires can be connected to electrical outputs inside the vehicle to monitor different events like seat belt on/off, Engine temperature, engine oil level, PTO engaged, cabin temperature, etc….

4- In simpler terms what does it capture or report?

I’ll give you an example of the daily report: driver identification - beginning and end of trip – parking, driving and idle times – distance covered – maximum speed and RPM – Acceleration & Deceleration – Fuel consumption– Live or Historical tracking – Location management, where did my vehicle go? All the data captured is transferred live using the GSM network.

5- How can the fleet mgt help a company?

A company needs to monitor their moving assets: cars, vans, pick ups, trucks or trailers in order to:

A: Lower the running costs: by setting limitations to the speed and RPM, the IVMS will help the company reduce the fuel consumption, minimize tear and wear of the vehicle engine, parts and tires and minimize the risk of accident

B: Increase the mobile staff productivity and efficiency:  Tracking the companies vehicles and drivers will bring the transparency the company needs which is the key for higher productivity and consequently increased efficiency. On our application, the client will access on digital and Google Pro maps.

C: Increase driver safety: by setting speed and rpm limits, the company reduces the risk of accident and driver injury contributing in road safety.

6- Does it have any other benefit?

As you know, the nations are looking to use clean energy in the objective of going green and reducing the harms of the consumable energy we are using today. Most of the international companies are adopting strategies to reduce their impact on CO2 emissions and an IVMS does help reduce CO2 emissions just by monitoring vehicle speed & rpm. In fact one of our reports shows emitted CO2.

7- Is it simple to operate?

Yes, the company database is hosted on Mix Telematics web application accessible using a log in name and password; any operator with some computer knowledge will learn how to navigate in our application creating different reports. Furthermore, our customer relation management program assist operators to go deeper and deeper in the application to fully understand the extent of this powerful tool.

8- Who are your customers?

Any company operating vehicles and drivers is a potential customer from F&B delivery to contracting, logistics, Oil & Gas, technical support, sales force, rental cars, delivery, security, etc… when we started in 1996, Lebanese companies were still hesitating to use such a helping tool but now companies are aware of the benefits an IVMS can bring to their operation and we see an increasing demand.

9- Are you alone in the market?

Of course not, we know of at least 4 other providers.

10- Why then chose your product, Mix Telematics?

Our added values are numerous such as our long experience in this field, our international references from our international footprint, our range of products from simple track and tracer to full fleet mgt with driver, vehicle and engine mgt, our technical capability to install on any kind of vehicle be it old or new, small or big, our commitment to client satisfaction and last but not least our list of satisfied clients.

Today we offer two products that can work on same application:

We are now preparing to launch a new product/solution, the FM protector which will be positioned to address the market sector pertaining to small & semi-professional fleets.

11- Does it only work on vehicles?

No actually, it can be a solution for power engines, boats, cranes or heavy machinery. We connect to engines and provide reports to different industry needs; for example: our agent in the UAE have equipped over 1000 Caterpillar power engines in the mere objective of controlling these engines working in remote areas from a central control room from Abu Dhabi. The company needed to check on the working hours to set preventive maintenance program and make sure their clients get the most of the rented or sold engine. We will also introduce the FM Protector for cies or restaurants operating a fleet of motorcycles.

12- What’s next for fleet mgt?

In one of the world forum, we saw insurance companies studying the use of On-Board computers to minimize the risk of accidents and lower their expenses, which means clients, will get a lower insurance premium; this is only an example.

Lowering operational cost is the future and a fleet mgt definitely answers this objective.
